Opening Luncheon

The Ikebana International Philadelphia chapter #71 began our 2022 - 2023 year with the opening luncheon at “The Farmhouse at People’s Light and Theater,” on September 15th. This time we had Ikenobo on demonstration by Mrs. Kyoko Peterson, a Senior Professor, which is the highest level in the school of Ikenobo. She demonstrated the wide range of styles of the Ikenobo from a classical rikka to an abstract freestyle, and also taught a workshop the next day.

I forgot to bring my iPhone camera with me. I am so sorry that I was not able to take any photos from her beautiful demo arrangements. The pictures here are from other sources and a friend of mine sent them to me. I am so grateful!

Horizontal Free Style and Calla Lily

After September's Lesson, I had extra flower materials left, such as a bunch of baby’s breath, fall color mums and three callas. I like to use this black and red container, because of it wide open mouth, and I found my old, painted black twigs, which stabilized all the flower materials. It turned out to be a long horizontal arrangement!

September Class Lesson 3 - Mid Autumn Festival

Hata Sensei asked us to choose one of the Sofu Teshigahara’s fifty principles of Sogetsu and make an arrangement by reflecting and understanding it. I picked principle #48: “Remember there are always new, surprising themes and approaches to arranging ikebana.”

It’s not officially Autumn yet, but I can sense fall is in the air! Mid autumn festival is around the corner!

September Class Lessons 1- Color of the Container

We resumed our new year (September, 2022 to June, 2023) of Ikebana class lessons on September 13. After two months of summer break, I am really looking forward to having these class lessons and am eager to see my Sensei, Mrs. Hata. I just love her! She is a great and kind teacher!

We always have three lessons, two in the morning, one in the afternoon.

Lesson One - Color of the container: I loved my choices of materials and crystal container.

I like both arrangements, and you?

September Class Lesson 2 - Shape of the Container

The shape of the bamboo container has straight and curved lines. My materials, the calla lily and driftwood, also have curved and straight lines.

Ornamental Onion plant - Allium

The perennial ornamental onion plant and the annual lantana are blooming in my backyard garden. I made an arrangement using them just for fun.

An Arrangement after Exhibition

Our annual Shofuso Exhibition was this past weekend, and the beautiful weather cooperated.  We had very good attendance (around 700 people), and I heard that there were so many wonderful comments about the beauty of our works. I am so grateful! (9/2 - 9/4 )

After the exhibition at the Shofuso Japanese house and garden, I reused the same ceramic container, some wood structure, and still fresh philodendron to make another, different arrangement.
