M W G C- April Little Show- Parallel Design

  

Materials: azalea, blue bell, columbine, daffodil leaves, and salvia.

"One by Land, Two by Sea"- a Parallel Design to commemorate Paul Reverie's ride. Three or more groupings of plant material that must arrange as single unit in one container.

April Orchids Bloom

I brought these three orchids to the BCOS meeting tonight (4/19). There were not many blooming orchids at this time on the show table as last month.

Max. Tenuifolia. The flower only 1.5 inches in size.
Our society member Andy gave me this plant after he divided the original plant couple years ago. I treat all my orchids equally, some faithfully bloom every year and some you just have to wait...wait for many years. Sooner or later it will bloom surprisingly. It happened to me in many cases (above picture is one of them). That is the joy of  growing orchids.

Free Style- Branch in full bloom

Fully utilized the Azalea branch. I tried to arrange two styles: Moribana( suipan) and Nageire (Tall vase). See which one is prettier? ( I trimmed off more flowers).
I forced the Azalea branch that I cut from my daughter's garden 7 weeks ago, I used it for class assignment "Young and Old" last week. Now in full bloom.

Free Style " Young and Old"

Materials: Young azalea, old driftwood and old Japanese box.
In today's class, my teacher wanted us to arrange something to signify young and old materials harmoniously together. Especially there are so many new leaves and budding branches right now. I chose azalea, combined with old driftwood and old Japanese box to make this composition.
I trimmed a lot of azalea leaves (before trimming, see right picture below) and rearranged the composition (above picture done in the class and below left rearranged at home). 4/4/2012

Contain: Ceramic vase (I bought from Japan).
I did this in November 2009 class (book3-18). Teacher gave us this assignment again; she wants to push us to the next level. It can be viewed from both sides. (4-4-2012)

M.W.G.C - March Little Show

"Spring Cerebration"- an Exhibition Table Type1.
Must include a decorative unit with plant material. 24"x 24"x 30". I got honorable mention. Even though it looks very Spring (Forsythia, Daffodil, Hyacinth), it didn't express any celebration (ex. wine glasses).

"Emerald City"- a Pot-et-Fleur Design.
Two or more living plants must dominate. I have two potted different cacti, pale green hydrangea and other plants arranged in the deep container, covered by moss. I earned 1st place for this one.

Longwood Gardens Orchid Show - The Ghost Orchid

March is a peak blooming month for many spectacular orchids. It is the main season for flower and orchid shows as well.

Longwood Gardens International Orchid Show and Sale from March 23-25, 2012. In collaboration with SEPOS.

The Bucks County Orchid Society exhibit at Longwood Gardens was outstanding. During the time we were in our display area, many compliments were received and a lot of photos were taken (esp. of the ghost orchid). I had two orchids displayed there too.

The pictures shown below are the orchids from other societies. There were so many orchids, I only posted a few of them.

The right picture is Lycastes. Lycastes is prized for its remarkable triangular flowers and exquisite fragrances. Lycastes virginalis bears showy and colorful flowers and its alba form is the national flower of Guatemala.

I bough this plant four years ago, since then it has not bloomed for two years until now. It belongs to Botanical category.

Some of these orchids are going to Longwood gardens International Orchid Show. Incollaboration with Southeastern Pennsylvania Orchid Society( SEPOS).

Two Arrangements Using Flowering Branches

I love this time of the year, most of the tree branches have started forming new leaves and flower buds. There are so many branch materials I can choose for Ikebana. Japanese flowering Quince is my favorite. Above are my arrangements:
The first one was done in class with my teacher's advice to trim down some branches.
The second one was done at home to make good use of other branches I had.
