Art in Bloom - Interpretation with Contemporary Art

Art in Bloom at the Delaware Contemporary art museum is an exhibit featuring floral arrangements created by members of Ikebana International of the Philadelphia Chapter. The arrangements are designed to complement and correspond to the contemporary art, on display from 12/5 to 12/8/2019 in the Delaware Contemporary art museum.
My choice of painting is by artist Peter Wayne Lewis. With Jamaican roots, he studied painting in the United States. He is a tenured professor of painting at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. His work is inspired by the world of jazz (his father was a jazz musician), and by famous Chinese masters of calligraphy with Buddhism influence.

Below was my Ikebana arrangement in interpretation of his painting. I got the chance to meet the artist. Prof. Lewis was very pleased with my arrangement and said I interpreted it very well too. It made me very happy!

Here were the other members' arrangements with their choices of paintings. There were five artists exhibiting their many art works at the museum, only twenty some paintings chosen by Ikebanists.

Below were some arrangements that interpreted the art pieces very well.

November Class with Hata Sensei - Paper Sculpture

The lesson of this month is "with paper". There is no rule and limit! You can use paper wrap around the Otoshi (water holder) to make a container ( see below my original arrangement ) or you can make a paper sculpture place besides, or behind for your flower arrangement as part of design. We spend morning hours to watch Hata Sensei's demonstration with cutting paper to make a swirl shape sculpture that could be used as part of  designed arrangement, then made our own arrangement. In the afternoon lesson was Morimono Arrangement, variation No 7. Book 2. (11/18/2019)

East Meets West- Annual Exhibition

The 4th Annual Exhibition presented by Sogetsu Buxmont Study Group was held on November 9. The theme of this year was "East Meets West." When I was thinking about my design, I had to consider the words East and West. How to connect them together was a little bit of a challenge.
My first arrangement "The Window into Two Worlds" was my title. I need your imagination to explain it! Using a twig frame, azalea, bitter sweet, mum, pine and lichened wood branch / Ceramic
The second arrangement was my demonstration "A Romantic Moment". My choice for this container was a big champagne glass (West), the Ikebana arrangement (East) was a basic style. For the final touch were two candles and a fan. I heard an audience in back seat saying loudly SO ROMANTIC!

The rest of the arrangements were the study group members' creation. Personally, my humble opinion is: I would not put a figurine or object to accompany an arrangement for this theme "East meets West." Their titles I leave for your imagination.
